Random Notes & Drills

  1. Reloading
    1. Magazine Position
      • Position the extra magazine primer back
      • Grasp with your finger running along the front of the magazine
    2. Gun Position
      • Keep the gun up in front of your face
      • Tilt magazine well slightly towards your weak hand
    3. Process
      1. Grab new magazine
      2. Bring to gun, hold in between fingers
      3. Remove old magazine
      4. Look at a point just along the edge of the mag well
      5. When the magazine lips enter the magazine well, look at the target
      6. Continue pushing in
      7. When complete
        1. Drop old magazine
        2. Place old magazine someplace other than the magazine holder
        3. Resume grip and firing
  2. Water bottle Drill
    1. Hold a water bottle as you would a handgun
    2. Practice moving without shaking the water
  3. Cross Eye Dominant
    1. If you are cross eye dominant, move the handgun slightly to one side
    2. Don't cock your head
  4. Grip
    1. You steer the muzzle under recoil
    2. Practice with different off and strong hand grip amounts under the gun steers straight
    3. Generally, you want the off hand to provide the primary gripping force to control the recoil
    4. You only need one finger to hold the gun
      1. Hold the gun with strong hand only, just with middle finger
      2. Don't press with your thumb, press the backstrap against the pad in the back of your hand
      3. Press the trigger
      4. You will probably shoot more accurately this way than with a full grip
  5. Presentation
    1. Practice the draw backwards
    2. Don't look to reholster the gun, ever--learn where the holster is, instead
    3. The gun comes into the line of sight, not the line of sight to the gun
    4. Front sight first, then rear
